A History of the Printing Press

While we don’t know who invented the first printing press, the oldest known printed text came from China. This Buddhist scroll was published sometime around 868 CE and marked the first reproduction of text using a machine instead of handwriting. The text was produced using block printing, which involves hand-carved wood blocks cut specifically for a project that could not be re-used. Before the invention of the movable type printing press, any drawings or writing was done by hand on materials such as papyrus, parchment, clay, and wax. The work was typically reserved for scribes who lived and worked in monasteries within a special room called the scriptorium. There, working in silence, they would begin by measuring and outlining the page layout and carefully copying the text from another book. Then an illuminator would add designs and embellishments to the pages. However, during the Dark and Middle Ages, all books were owned by monasteries, educational institutions, and the wealthy. In Europe, around the late 1430s, a German goldsmith named Johannes Gutenberg invented the first movable-type printing press, which kick-started the printing revolution. He had previous experience working at a mint and realized he could use blocks within a machine to make the printing process quicker. This allowed him to mass-produce texts in a short span of time. He used metal blocks, and his machine came to be known as a ‘movable type machine’, as the metal block letters could be moved around to create new words and sentences. Gutenberg used this machine to make the very first printed book.

The first printing presses were operated by hand. Later, towards the 19th century, other inventors created printing presses that were steam-powered. Now we have electronic and automated printing presses that are faster than ever before. Today, there are different types of presses, each one suited to a specific type of printing.
