How to Create an Effective Brochure: Tips for Entrepreneurs

Here are a few suggestions to help you create a professional brochure to provide the marketing results you want.

1. Size
Your brochure design dictates how your targeted audience perceives it. However, this is also the part where entrepreneurs tend to make mistakes that can be expensive and time-consuming to fix.
A company brochure should ideally have a proper font and design size to make it comprehensible to targeted and existing clients. For instance, you wouldn’t use 8″ X 10″ paper for an 8.5″ x 11″ design. This can compromise the print resolution quality by either shrinking or stretching the entire design to fit the paper.

2. Bleed
In print, ‘bleeding’ refers to how far the entire design spreads on the brochure’s edge. Many brochures have graphics and colour along their edges to keep the paper from showing. Printers often recommend extending the design beyond the page’s borders; this is referred to as ‘bleed’. Extending the design beyond the page’s borders ensures that it reaches from edge to edge when the brochure is cut. This becomes vital if you have a pattern, colour or pictures that need to be presented to the edge of the design.

3. Picture Quality
A useful design tip we often give our clients is to use high-resolution graphics to help the message reach your target audience. Failing to use the right resolution can cause the picture to be blurry, pixilated or too soft. Remember, the picture we see on our laptop or PC screens only has 72 dots per inch (dpi). For effective brochure design, it’s necessary for you to use pictures at 300 dpi or higher.

4. Folds
The fold in a brochure dictates how the service or product information is presented to your target audience. This can make choosing the right fold challenging. You want the folds to complement the content and how it is read and understood. Factors such as a sequence of steps or different product features could use a brochure that folds open in a way to reveal every step in the sequence.

Designing a brochure is a part of creating an identity for your business. Now you have everything you need to design an incredible brochure that gets your brand’s message across to your target audience. By following these tips, you can inspire both new and existing customers to avail themselves of your products and/or services.
